Chapter 02Approach and Philosophy

The Person Reading Your Book Before Anyone Else Does

Before the tactics, the reasoning. This chapter covers the reality most authors face, who Katty is, the principles that guide the work and the kind of author this partnership serves well.

The Reality

This Is What I Keep Seeing

Excellent books go unread every week while weaker books in the same category collect readers, reviews and rank. Not because the market rewards worse writing, but because the weaker book was easier to find. Low Amazon rankings, thin review counts, launch momentum that evaporated, a genre that shifted underneath the title, pricing that signals the wrong tier, positioning that never quite named the shelf, these are the reasons good books stay invisible, and every one of them is fixable.

01

The Algorithm Forgot You

Launch week ended, the sales velocity dropped, and Amazon quietly stopped showing your book to new readers. Ranking decay is not a verdict on your writing, it is a feedback loop. Without fresh signals from categories, keywords, reviews and pricing, the store has nothing new to test your book against.

  • Ranking decay after launch momentum fades
  • Also-bought and also-viewed carousels going cold
  • Keyword coverage too narrow for the store to place you
02

Your Genre Changed Around You

Genres move. Tropes that were niche become the headline of every cover; price expectations shift; the subcategory readers actually browse gets renamed. A book positioned perfectly for its release year can be quietly mispositioned two years later without a single word changing.

  • Cover and blurb conventions moved on
  • Category and trope language no longer matches reader search
  • Price band drifted away from comparable titles
03

Your Readers Love You. They Just Cannot Find You.

Strong ratings and warm reviews with thin sales is the clearest signal in book marketing: the product works, the discovery path does not. The work is not persuasion, it is putting the book in front of the readers who were always going to enjoy it.

  • High average rating, low review volume
  • No repeatable discovery channel beyond your existing list
  • Series read-through leaking between books

About Me

Katty Taylor Griffin

Book Marketing Specialist

I work with authors whose writing quality has outpaced their commercial visibility, the ones with warm reviews, loyal early readers and a book that simply is not reaching the audience it was written for. My work begins with research, not with a pitch.

Before I recommend anything, I study the book the way a reader, a competitor and the store's algorithm each see it. That means examining:

Amazon rankings
Category positioning
Keyword visibility
Pricing
Review sentiment
Competitors
Available formats
Audience pathways
Genre communities
BookTok and Bookstagram discovery

The principles I work by

  • , Research before recommendation
  • , Honesty over flattery
  • , Author-specific strategy
  • , Every genre respected equally
  • , Transparency throughout the process
  • , No inflated projections

What I Bring to Every Engagement

Amazon marketplace knowledge
Genre-specific pricing and positioning
Competitive landscape analysis
BookTok and Bookstagram strategy
Review sentiment analysis
Reader-behavior mapping
Series read-through funnel architecture
Comparable-author audience targeting
Cross-community audience building
My Philosophy

Every Good Book Deserves a Strategy as Thoughtful as the Writing Itself

Marketing cannot repair a book that is not ready, and no honest marketer can guarantee a bestseller list. What good marketing can do is make sure a good book is positioned correctly, priced correctly, categorized correctly and presented to the readers most likely to love it, consistently, and long after launch week.

“I do not offer the same strategy to every author. I do the work of understanding your specific situation before recommending what you should do next.”
01, Research First, Always

No recommendation leaves my desk before I have read the listing, the sample, the reviews and the competitive set. Opinions are cheap; evidence is what changes outcomes.

02, Problems First, Not Services

I identify what is actually holding your book back before anyone talks about scope. If the fix is a category change you can make yourself in ten minutes, I will tell you that.

03, Industry Language, Not Empty Jargon

Read-through, sell-through, category rank, keyword coverage, review velocity. Precise words describe precise problems. Buzzwords describe nothing.

04, Your Book, Your Strategy

A hockey romance and a WWII literary novel do not share a playbook. Every strategy is written for one book, one genre and one audience.

05, Honest About Limitations

Marketing cannot rewrite a weak manuscript or promise a bestseller list. Where the ceiling is real, I will name it rather than sell around it.

Who I Work With

Is This Right for You?

We Are a Great Fit If You:

  • Have at least one published book
  • Have received positive reader feedback
  • Want a sustainable author career
  • Are open to data-driven feedback
  • Understand that marketing requires investment
  • Are willing to improve pricing, positioning, or categories

I Am Probably Not the Right Fit If You:

  • Demand guaranteed bestseller status
  • Want instant virality
  • Refuse to make evidence-based adjustments
  • Want a generic marketing package
  • Have not completed your manuscript
  • Expect results without participating

Small Authors

One or two titles, a modest list, and limited budget. The priority is fixing what is free to fix first, categories, keywords, blurb, price, formats, before a single advertising pound is spent.

Mid-Level Authors

A working backlist and real readers, but growth that has flattened. The priority is read-through, backlist activation and turning scattered attention into a repeatable discovery path.

Traditionally Published Authors

A publisher handles some of the machinery, but rarely the long tail. The priority is the author-controlled layer: platform, community, comparable-author positioning and backlist visibility between releases.

Chapter 03Visibility, Positioning and Reader Discovery

Making a Good Book Findable

Marketing here means research before recommendations: how your book is positioned, where it sits in the catalogue, how it is priced and which readers are already looking for it.

Find the Right Service
How It Works

What Happens When You Send Me Your Book

No discovery-call maze, no proposal deck before anyone has looked at the book. The first thing that happens is research.

  1. 01

You send me your Amazon link

One link, plus anything you want me to know about your goals. Nothing to install, no long intake form.

  2. 02

I conduct the research most marketers skip

Rankings, categories, keywords, price bands, formats, review language and the competitive shelf your book sits on.

  3. 03

I send you what I found

A plain-language summary of the visibility problems I identified, with the evidence behind each one.

  4. 04

    You decide whether it resonates

If the findings do not match your experience of the book, say so. If they do, we talk about what to do about them.

  5. 05

    We build your strategy together

A sequenced plan you can execute, with priorities, trade-offs and measurement built in from the start.

What Does Your Book Need Right Now?

Choose the option closest to your situation to see where Katty would begin. The full service list follows below.

What I Do

Services Built Around Your Specific Situation

“I do not sell generic packages. I sell clarity.” Every engagement below starts from the same place: research into your book, then a recommendation you can act on. Scope and pricing are quoted per book, after the assessment.

01

Author Visibility Audit

Best fit

Authors with a published book that is underperforming its reviews.

A full diagnostic of how your book is currently found, or not found. I map rank history, category placement, keyword coverage, price position, format gaps and the language readers use about the book in reviews.

Deliverables

  • Visibility diagnostic document
  • Ranked list of the three core problems
  • Evidence appendix with competitor comparisons

You stop guessing which lever to pull and start with the one that is actually stuck.

Request a Custom Assessment
02

Book Launch Strategy

Best fit

Authors 8 to 16 weeks out from publication.

A sequenced launch plan built around your genre's real discovery pathways: pre-order behaviour, category selection, keyword sets, review generation, pricing at release and the first thirty days of momentum.

Deliverables

  • Week-by-week launch calendar
  • Category and keyword recommendations
  • Pricing and pre-order plan

Launch signals arrive together instead of scattering, giving the store something to amplify.

Request a Custom Assessment
03

Launch Recovery

Best fit

Authors whose release did not land the way it should have.

A post-mortem plus a restart. We identify what failed, timing, positioning, category, price, absent formats, and design a credible relaunch rather than pretending the first launch did not happen.

Deliverables

  • Launch post-mortem
  • Relaunch sequence with timing
  • Repositioning recommendations

A second, better-informed run at the readers you missed the first time.

Request a Custom Assessment
04

Backlist Revitalization

Best fit

Authors with older titles that still deserve readers.

Older books are often the cheapest growth available to an author. I refresh categories, keywords, blurbs and pricing against the genre as it exists now, not as it existed at publication.

Deliverables

  • Per-title refresh plan
  • Updated metadata and blurb direction
  • Promotion sequencing across the backlist

Titles already written begin earning attention again.

Request a Custom Assessment
05

Series Read-Through Funnel

Best fit

Authors with two or more books in a series.

I trace where readers stop. Book one pricing, end-matter, series branding, ordering clarity and blurb continuity all decide whether a reader continues or quietly leaves after the first title.

Deliverables

  • Read-through leak analysis
  • Funnel architecture across the series
  • End-matter and series-branding guidance

More of the readers you already paid to acquire continue to the next book.

Request a Custom Assessment
06

Amazon Optimization

Best fit

Authors whose listing is doing less work than it could.

Categories, keywords, A+ content direction, blurb structure, series pages and format setup, the mechanical layer of discoverability that quietly determines who ever sees the book.

Deliverables

  • Category and keyword set
  • Blurb structure recommendations
  • Listing and format checklist

The store can finally place your book where its readers already browse.

Request a Custom Assessment
07

Comparable-Author Audience Strategy

Best fit

Authors who know their book is good but cannot describe its shelf.

I identify the authors your readers already buy, then map how those audiences discover new titles, so your positioning borrows an existing reading habit instead of inventing one.

Deliverables

  • Comparable-author set with rationale
  • Positioning statement and shelf language
  • Targeting map for ads and outreach

Your book becomes easy to recommend in one sentence.

Request a Custom Assessment
08

Author Platform Building

Best fit

Authors building a career, not just promoting one title.

A realistic platform plan: the newsletter, the one or two social surfaces worth your time, and the content cadence that fits how you actually work.

Deliverables

  • Platform priority plan
  • Newsletter and list-growth structure
  • Sustainable content cadence

Each new release starts from an audience instead of from zero.

Request a Custom Assessment
09

Cross-Community Audience Building

Best fit

Authors whose book sits between genres or interests.

Some books belong to more than one community, a history readership and a literary one, a sports audience and a romance one. I map those overlaps and the etiquette of each community.

Deliverables

  • Community map with entry points
  • Message framing per community
  • Outreach sequence and cadence

Two smaller audiences combine into one durable readership.

Request a Custom Assessment
10

Pricing and Format Strategy

Best fit

Authors unsure what to charge or which formats to publish.

Price is positioning. I analyse comparable titles by format, length and genre expectation, and identify which missing format is costing you readers.

Deliverables

  • Price band analysis by format
  • Format gap assessment
  • Promotional pricing calendar

Your pricing signals the right quality tier and stops leaving readers unserved.

Request a Custom Assessment
Genre Expertise

I Learn Your Genre Before I Touch Your Marketing

Reader behaviour, discovery channels and pricing expectations are genre-specific. A strategy that ignores that is a template with your book’s name on it.

Historical Fiction

Reader behaviour
Readers are period-loyal and research-respectful; they follow settings and eras more than authors.
Discovery channels
Genre newsletters, library and book-club channels, history-adjacent communities.
Pricing
Tolerates higher ebook pricing when length and research signal substance.
Positioning challenge
Blurbs that hide the era or conflict behind literary abstraction.
Opportunity
Era-specific keywords and cross-community reach into nonfiction history readers.

Mystery and Thriller

Reader behaviour
High-volume, fast-reading, series-loyal, strongly driven by pace promises.
Discovery channels
Also-bought carousels, deal newsletters, series page browsing.
Pricing
Competitive; book one pricing decides read-through for the whole series.
Positioning challenge
Subgenre confusion, cozy, procedural, domestic and psychological read very differently.
Opportunity
Precise subgenre placement plus series funnel work compounds quickly.

Romance

Reader behaviour
The most trope-literate readership in publishing; they buy by promise, not premise.
Discovery channels
BookTok, Bookstagram, review communities and rapid word of mouth.
Pricing
Sensitive; readers know the going rate per heat level and length.
Positioning challenge
Covers or blurbs that under-signal trope and heat level.
Opportunity
Trope-forward positioning and comparable-author targeting move numbers fast.

Young Adult

Reader behaviour
Aesthetic-led discovery with a substantial adult crossover readership.
Discovery channels
BookTok, Bookstagram, school and library channels.
Pricing
Print matters more than most categories; ebook price alone rarely tells the story.
Positioning challenge
Positioning that reads as neither firmly YA nor adult.
Opportunity
Visual-first campaigns and community seeding suit the category's discovery habits.

Children’s Picture Books

Reader behaviour
The buyer is an adult; the audience is a child. Two different pitches, one listing.
Discovery channels
Search by theme and occasion, gifting seasons, educator and parent channels.
Pricing
Print-led; format availability is often the whole problem.
Positioning challenge
Miscategorisation by age band is extremely common and quietly fatal.
Opportunity
Correct age and theme categories can transform discoverability without ad spend.

Poetry

Reader behaviour
Readers browse by theme, voice and occasion rather than by plot.
Discovery channels
Social excerpts, literary communities, gifting and event-led moments.
Pricing
Slim volumes need careful price framing against perceived length.
Positioning challenge
Listings that describe the collection without ever quoting it.
Opportunity
Excerpt-led marketing lets the writing sell itself.

Business and Nonfiction

Reader behaviour
Readers buy outcomes and author credibility before prose.
Discovery channels
Search-driven keywords, professional networks, podcasts and speaking.
Pricing
Higher tolerance; low pricing can actively undercut perceived authority.
Positioning challenge
Real-world authority that never made it into the digital listing.
Opportunity
Keyword coverage plus credibility signals compound over years.

Memoir and Literary Fiction

Reader behaviour
Reviews, awards and recommendation culture drive purchases more than ads.
Discovery channels
Book clubs, review outlets, curated newsletters, bookseller advocacy.
Pricing
Stable; discounting rarely creates demand in this category.
Positioning challenge
Universal-sounding blurbs that give the reader nothing specific to hold.
Opportunity
Sharp thematic positioning and book-club framing open durable channels.
The Difference

What Generic Book Marketing Sounds Like vs. What I Actually Say

Generic book marketing

  • “We’ll increase your book’s visibility.”
  • “We’ll boost your sales with proven strategies.”
  • “Our platform reaches millions of readers.”
  • “We’ll get your book trending on social media.”
  • “Our package includes a full marketing campaign.”
  • “We’ll make your book a bestseller.”

What I actually say

  • “You’re ranked #184,000 overall and outside the top 100 in your only relevant subcategory.”
  • “Your 4.6 rating across 38 reviews says the book works; the discovery path is what is failing.”
  • “You’re priced at $6.99 where comparable titles sit at $4.99 with print and audio alongside.”
  • “You’re in two broad categories; there are three narrower ones your readers actually browse.”
  • “Ebook only in a genre where print and library demand carry the category.”
  • “Reviewers keep using three phrases that appear nowhere in your blurb or keywords.”

Chapter 04Covers, Interiors and Publishing Presentation

The First Thing a Reader Judges

Design carries the same research as the marketing work. Covers, interiors and series systems are built so a browsing reader recognises the genre, trusts the production and opens the book.

See Design Services

Design Is the First Marketing Decision

A reader judges your book before reading a single sentence. The cover sets the genre promise, the interior sets the reading experience and both decide whether a browsing reader trusts the book enough to open it. Design here is treated as part of the marketing strategy, not as decoration applied afterwards.

  • Genre first: a cover has one second to tell a reader what kind of book this is.
  • Thumbnail legibility: most readers meet your cover at the size of a postage stamp.
  • Typography with intent: type carries as much genre signal as illustration does.
  • Production accuracy: files that pass retailer validation the first time.
Design Services

What Katty Designs

Every design engagement begins with the same research that drives the marketing work: the genre, the comparable titles and the reader who has to choose your book over the one next to it.

Author Brand Assets

Consistent typography, colour and layout for your author page, newsletter and social profiles.

Chapter 05Research to Completion

How the Work Actually Runs

A clear sequence from first assessment through research, strategy and delivery, so you always know what stage your book is in and what happens next.

My Process

From Research to Results

  1. Step 01

    Deep Research

I read the listing, the sample, the reviews and the competitive shelf. I record rank behaviour, category placement, keyword coverage, price bands by format, and the exact language readers use when they recommend the book.

Deliverable: Research file with sourced observations

  2. Step 02

    Problem Identification

Everything found gets reduced to the few problems that actually gate visibility for this book. Typically three. Anything below the line is noted but not prioritised.

Deliverable: Ranked problem statement with evidence

  3. Step 03

    Custom Strategy Development

Each problem gets a specific, sequenced response, metadata changes, pricing moves, format additions, community entry points, launch or relaunch timing, with the trade-offs written down.

Deliverable: Strategy document with priority order

  4. Step 04

    Implementation Support

You can execute it yourself with the document, or I stay alongside you: reviewing copy, checking category selections, sanity-checking ad targeting and pacing the rollout.

Deliverable: Implementation checklist and review passes

  5. Step 05

    Measurement and Adjustment

We agree in advance what would count as movement, then look at it honestly. What worked gets extended. What did not gets replaced rather than defended.

Deliverable: Measurement plan and adjustment notes
